Job definition
This position serves the needs of No More Deaths by facilitating a multiplicity of inroads for incoming volunteers to support our humanitarian-aid work in the borderlands. The primary duties will involve preparing for and implementing NMD’s Desert Aid volunteer program from April through mid-October. Secondarily the position will support in-town events aimed at building local volunteer capacity and community engagement.
Duties

Administer Desert Aid volunteer program (60 percent):

  • Ensure that program dates and application updates are posted on the NMD website in a timely manner
  • Track volunteer applications and bottom-line application-review process
  • Communicate with interested, accepted, and rejected volunteers
  • Provide comprehensive prearrival info to incoming volunteers
  • Invoice volunteers and track payments
  • Provide Desert Aid facilitators with demographic info about incoming volunteers
  • When solicited, serve as point person for volunteer concerns or questions and assume responsibility for bringing these to the core group as appropriate
  • Coordinate debriefs for outgoing volunteers as needed and share pertinent feedback with Desert Aid Working Group
  • With logistics coordinator, check in on and maintain upkeep of interior of volunteer apartment
  • Collect agenda items and prepare agenda for weekly Desert Aid Working Group meetings
  • Attend weekly Desert Aid Working Group meetings
  • Keep Desert Aid calendars organized and current
  • Attend monthly facilitator meetings as needed
  • Work closely as a team with the Desert Aid logistics coordinator
  • Administer Desert Aid facilitators list

General NMD volunteer coordination (30 percent):

  • Respond promptly to volunteer information requests by email and phone
  • Bottom-line monthly orientations that inform potential volunteers of the scope of NMD work, including NMD history, legal issues, Desert Aid protocols, and how to get involved with the work we do; assemble team of volunteers to help host orientations
  • Ensure content of monthly orientations is current
  • With logistics coordinator, bottom-line fortnightly community assemblies by assembling a team of volunteers to plan content and host event
  • Track translation and childcare needs and services for community assemblies
  • With logistics coordinator, administer Odd Jobs email list
  • Administer daytrips email list

Continuing education and administration (10 percent):

  • Attend at least one meeting of each NMD working group and support group over the duration of the position
  • Attend at least three spokescouncil meetings over the duration of the position
  • Attend one event or meeting per month that is hosted by a group that isn’t NMD and works on borderland issues
  • Attend monthly personnel meetings
  • With the help of long-term volunteers, train incoming volunteer coordinator at the end of the position in one-week overlap period
  • Other job duties as they arise
Requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated, independently able to identify issues and come up with innovative solutions
  • Proficiency with Google suite of apps (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Groups, Calendar)
  • Proficiency with PowerPoint software
  • Strong sense of humor and flexibility
  • Knowledge of migration issues along the US–Mexico border and among communities within the US is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with program development and/or community organizing with affected communities is a plus.
  • Spanish speakers (fluent or native speaker) are preferred.
Contract conditions
  • Monthly salary of $1,680 full time
  • Cell phone provided by NMD, to be used for job purposes only
  • Responsible access to NMD vehicle (if NMD vehicle not available, transportation expenses related to NMD work will be reimbursed)
  • Personnel support group will meet with the volunteer on a monthly basis (or as needed) to provide ongoing support and feedback during the time of service.
