Job definition
We are looking for a coordinator for the desert-aid volunteer program. This position serves the needs of No More Deaths by coordinating volunteers who are providing direct aid from the desert camps in the Arivaca and Ajo areas of southern Arizona. The primary duties will involve preparing for and implementing the month-long volunteer program from October through February as well as alternative-spring-break programming in March. We are seeking candidates who are also motivated to work on volunteer-program development and outreach to local volunteers and affected communities.
Duties
  • Ensure that all recruitment materials are posted on the NMD website and distributed widely.
  • Respond promptly to volunteer information requests by email and phone.
  • Screen applications and send prearrival materials to new volunteers.
  • Welcome new volunteers, provide basic orientation about their time working with NMD, and follow up about volunteer donations.
  • Plan volunteer trainings and ensure that new volunteers receive adequate information before participating in desert-aid work (NMD history, legal issues, protocols, update on field work and conditions, scheduling info).
  • Assist in the coordination of volunteer transportation to and from sites, as necessary.
  • Serve as point person for volunteer concerns or questions and assume responsibility for bringing these to the core group as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with NMD facilitators and serve as liaison between visiting volunteers and NMD Tucson. This includes utilizing protocols to mediate concerns pertaining to volunteers.
  • Communicate weekly with facilitators regarding volunteer needs, provide leadership team with information in advance pertaining to volunteers scheduled for upcoming week (i.e., name, skills, medical information).
  • Check in on and maintain upkeep for volunteer housing.
  • Work with larger group to ensure that volunteer-support infrastructure is able to respond to NMD’s ongoing needs.
  • Coordinate and organize local volunteers, as needed, to ensure adequate coverage at field sites.
  • Assist in development of volunteer programming to better respond to the changing environment of the borderlands, and participate in outreach to better integrate local volunteers as well as volunteers from affected communities.
  • Work with core group to ensure that volunteer infrastructure is able to respond to NMD’s ongoing needs and that NMD is providing adequate support to volunteers in return.
  • Attend NMD’s weekly Monday-night meetings and Desert Aid Working Group (DAWG) meetings, as well as monthly desert-aid facilitator and personnel meetings.
  • Unlock doors and prepare space for Monday-night and DAWG meetings. Ensure space is left as found and locked after.
  • Work closely as a team with the desert-aid logistics coordinator.
  • Refer inquiries to appropriate person or working group (media, abuse doc, etc.).
Requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated, independently able to identify issues and come up with innovative solutions
  • Proficiency with Google suite of apps (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Groups, Calendar)
  • Naturally skilled in planning, organization, and logistics
  • Strong sense of humor and flexibility
  • Knowledge of migration issues along the US–Mexico border and among communities within the US is strongly preferred
  • Experience with program development and/or community organizing with affected communities is a plus
  • Spanish speakers (fluent or native speaker) are preferred
Contract conditions
  • Monthly salary of $1,600 full time, $800 half time
  • Cell phone provided by NMD
  • Access to NMD vehicle, or, if not available, transportation expenses related to NMD work will be reimbursed
  • Personnel support group will meet with the volunteer on a monthly basis (or as needed) to provide ongoing support and feedback during the time of service
