Job definition
This position requires effective communication and coordination skills to support No More Deaths’s year-round volunteer programs. This position manages the movement of supplies, information and training, volunteers, vehicles, and other resources from Tucson to field sites. The logistics coordinator must be highly organized and able to manage many details and moving pieces, while also keeping a big-picture view of Desert Aid. The logistics coordinator works closely with the volunteer coordinator as well as with several of the NMD working groups. As the point person for logistics, they are expected to respond in a timely manner to requests and needs, and to delegate responsibilities effectively, making use of NMD community resources.
Duties
Coordinating the facilitation teams:

  • Build open lines of communication with all field-site long-term volunteers and facilitators
  • Participate in all facilitator meetings, Desert Aid Working Group meetings, and community assemblies
  • Attend a minimum of one spokescouncil meeting over the duration of the position
  • Maintain calendar for coordinating field sites and facilitators
  • Visit field sites as needed
  • Possess an organizational credit card to be used for NMD expenses; collect receipts and give to bookkeeper monthly

Material aid, vehicles, and resource allocation:

  • Coordinate all vehicles coming in and out of the field and know the location of all vehicles
  • Answer texts and phone calls on the logistics phone in a timely manner
  • Work with vehicle committee to ensure vehicle-check logs are completed and maintenance occurs promptly, as needed
  • With the vehicle working group and volunteer coordinator, establish the movement of all vehicles, supplies, facilitators, and volunteers for each new transition to the field
  • Make sure all volunteer drivers of NMD vehicles are at least 21 years of age, have valid driver’s licenses, have copies of them on file (an insurance requirement), are qualified/trained to drive 4×4 vehicles in the desert, have signed a NMD driver’s agreement, and have read the backcountry-driving policy
  • Coordinate water orders, pickup, delivery, and crate return
  • Coordinate with medical team, food-bank/groceries team, etc., to provide adequate and timely supplies
  • Assist in coordination of volunteer transportation to and from sites
  • Assist with setup of NMD cell phones and managing their use
  • Collect, sort, and distribute incoming material-aid donations (oversee NMD shed at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church)
  • Respond to all parking/traffic tickets, impounds, seizures, or vehicle citations

Other (some shared with volunteer coordinator):

  • Oversee NMD office/storeroom at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, and ensure office at Global Justice Center is kept clean and tidy
  • Unlock doors and prepare space for community assemblies and working-group meetings as needed; ensure space is left as found and locked after
  • Responsible for grounds maintenance and cleanup outside the volunteer apartment; shared duty with volunteer coordinator for interior of apartment
  • Maintain working relationship with St. Mark’s facilities administrator
  • With volunteer coordinator, bottom-line fortnightly community assemblies by assembling a team of volunteers to plan content and host event
  • Attend NMD community assemblies, weekly Desert Aid Working Group meetings, and at least one spokescouncil meeting to stay up to date with logistical tasks and questions
  • With volunteer coordinator, administer Odd Jobs email list
  • Meet monthly, or as needed, with personnel committee
  • Provide quarterly report at NMD meeting and respond to regular feedback from support group
  • Provide season-end report to NMD
  • With the help of long-term volunteers, train incoming logistics coordinator at the end of the position in one-week overlap period
  • Other duties as they arise
Requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated, independently able to identify issues and come up with innovative solutions
  • Proficiency with Google suite of apps (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Groups, Calendar)
  • For the purpose of vehicle insurance, the applicant must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift approximately 40 pounds (e.g., crates of water, tires)
  • Preferred: basic mechanical knowledge of trucks
Contract conditions
  • Monthly salary of $1,680 full time
  • Cell phone provided by NMD, to be used for logistics purposes only
  • Access to NMD vehicle (if NMD vehicle not available, transportation expenses related to NMD work will be reimbursed)
  • Personnel support group will meet with the logistics coordinator on a monthly basis (or as needed) to provide ongoing support and feedback during the time of service.
